Romantic early 19th Century Vienna recreated in Adelaide

May 20 2013

The Firm Schubert 2013

Adelaide Chamber Music Promoters The Firm will open their 2013 Concert Series with an evening of intimate music by the great romantic composer of the early 19th century, Franz Schubert.

Featuring rarely heard vocal quartets and duos alongside much loved lieder and piano pieces, leading Adelaide Soprano Emma Horwood will be joined by Alto Matthew Rutty, Tenor Martin Penhale, Bass Timothy Marks, and Jamie Cock on piano.

The program will be in the tradition of a Schubertiade – a gathering of friends devoted to exploring this most intimate vein of night music – with The Firm providing complimentary drinks and authentic Viennese tortes to patrons after the concert.

In his short lifetime, Schubert composed hundreds of songs (lieder), which were premiered in private houses around Vienna. Guests numbered from just a handful to over a hundred.

Schubert will feature throughout The Firm’s 2013 season of five concerts as their Posthumous-Composer-in-Residence. The concert series will also premier new works by South Australian Composers inspired by the genius of this Romantic master.

Adelaide composer and Co-director of The Firm, Raymond Chapman Smith, says “Schubert was an astonishingly gifted composer whose lyrical intensity and concise means of expression is a continual source of inspiration for composers of any generation”.

Three fine pianists, Marianna Grynchuk, Clemens Leske and Leigh Harrold, will present the final tryptich of Schubert’s great piano sonatas, and tenor Robert Macfarlane will return from Germany to unveil Schubert’s ‘Wanderer’ song cycle.

The series will also include a reflective journey through the atmospheric world of Philip Glass’s Metamorphosis, for solo piano.   Program details and photographs available from www.firmmusic.com.au
