Adelaide Airport gets arty for the Tour Down Under

January 10 2014

Bike Art AdelaideThe thousands of tourists coming through the Adelaide Airport for the 2014 Santos Tour Down Under will receive an unexpected treat with a bike art exhibition, called Tandem.

Tandem is part of the Bike Art Adelaide Festival – an umbrella program running from 13 – 31 January, 2014 – which brings Adelaide’s cycling and arts communities together to  explore, express and celebrate everything bike.

Visitors to the airport will see Adelaide artist Theofunya stitch a four-metre-high vertical garden from yarn and find bicycle tyres and abandoned bicycle pieces on the poles in the Adelaide Airport baggage claim area on the ground floor of the terminal building.

The public are invited to come and watch the garden growing on Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th of January between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm both days.

Tandem’s launch event on Thursday 23 January at 6.00pm will also feature the premier performance of a new dance work by Adelaide artists and Helpmann Academy Alumni, Alicia Harvie and Andrew Haycroft.

Called Bicycle Love, the dance was inspired by French choreographer Prue Lang who developed works in which the energy needed for the show is generated by the dancers whilst they perform, with solar powered costumes to power sound, pedal-powered lighting and dance shoes that charge batteries.

Alicia and Andrew have used Prue’s vision to create a dance work that investigates bicycles and energy cycles. Their short duet, which marries the humble bicycle with sustainability and dance, is sure to be an unforgettable audience experience and will commence at 6.30pm on Thursday 23rd January on the ground floor of the terminal building, next to Hudson’s coffeeudo Hi  .

Launch guests will then be given a map to conduct a self-guided tour of the exhibition, which is sponsored by the Adelaide Airport and Santos and auspiced by The Bicycle Institute of South Australia.

“It’s an exciting and busy time for cycling in South Australia and Bike Art Adelaide is a fabulous way to get everyday cyclists and art lovers engaged with the TDU as an event highlight in SA’s calendar,” says Bike Art Adelaide Festival Tandem Project Coordinator, Tegan Hale.

The Santos Tour Down Under attracted more than 760,400 people to Adelaide and regional South Australia last year, and international media coverage.
